Machine Learning Expert: From Model to Production

As a Sr. Machine Learning Engineer, you will have the opportunity to do groundbreaking machine learning work that will shape the logistics industry and the future of trucking.

You will split your time between designing and running experiments from the ground up, researching new algorithms and ways to improve the driver experience on our platform. You will partner with product leaders to quantify business problems, build and deploy systems to optimize the business and improve customer experience.

By applying your Machine Learning knowledge and technical skills, analytical mindset, and product intuition to this $1.2TT industry, you will help define the experiences we build for millions of professional drivers and hundreds of millions of businesses that rely on these drivers to serve their customers and keep the economy going. You will collaborate on a wide array of product and business problems with a diverse set of cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, Marketing, Finance and Design. You will use data and analysis to identify and solve product development’s biggest challenges. You will influence product strategy and investment decisions with data, be focused on impact, and
collaborate with other teams.

About the Role
You will help invent, implement and deploy state of the art machine learning solutions, including price prediction models and recommender systems to name a few. Part of this will include data engineering, exploration and building supporting services with the goal of optimizing the customer experience.

In addition, as a leader you will identify new opportunities and upcoming challenges and work with the product team to quantify critical questions to the success of the company.

Finally, you will convince and influence leaders using clear insights and recommendations. You will build credibility through structure and clarity, and be a trusted strategic partner.

Sr. Machine Learning Engineer Key Responsibilities

  • Own the full ML life cycle for a significant new ML product, including production quality.
  • You are a strong advocate for ML excellence.
  • Code deliverables in tandem with the engineering team.
  • Establish and leverage partnerships with our engineering team to find collaboration opportunities and exchange best practices.
  • Discover, ingest and work with large and complex data sets to solve a wide array of challenging problems using different analytical and statistical approaches.
  • Apply technical expertise with machine learning, quantitative analysis, experimentation, data mining, and the presentation of data to develop strategies for our products that serve to move billions of dollars for freight across the U.S. and, later, the world.
  • Develop and productionize scalable machine learning models from the ground up – training, feature engineering, and evaluation of learning models.
  • Design and develop monitoring tools for evaluating model performance at scale.
  • Inform direction and strategic decisions for the future of ML and large scale distributed systems
  • Define, understand, and test opportunities and levers to improve the product through ML models and applications, and drive ML-modeling roadmaps through your insights and recommendations.
  • Own and Drive the advancement of the scientific method, including but not limited to driving data best practices (e.g. analysis, goaling, experimentation, machine learning), improving analytical processes, scaling knowledge and tools, and mentoring other data scientists.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, data mining or artificial intelligence
  • Proven ability to translate insights into business recommendations
  • Experience with Hadoop/HBase/Pig or MapReduce/Sawzall/Bigtable/Hive/Spark
  •  Expert knowledge developing production level ML products
  • Expert with scripting languages such as Python, Perl, PHP, and/or shell scripts
  • Experience developing and debugging in Java, C++ or similar
  • Experience of demonstrating technical leadership working with teams, owning projects, defining and setting technical direction for projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  MS degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field with 5+ years of machine learning related work or research, or PhD degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field
  • Experience with filesystems, server architectures and distributed systems
