I'm looking for:

“Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products because the upgrade type is not supported or was not specified”

A client was installing SharePoint 2010 SP1 (KB2460045) + June CU (KB2536599) on their test server.  After installing, they ran the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard and only got the option create a new farm or attach to an existing farm, yet their Central Administration and their sites were working fine, albeit at the RTM patch level.

The first thing I tried was to run the Configuration Wizard manually using the psconfig –cmd upgrade command.  I actually got pretty far in the process before throwing the error:

An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException was thrown.  Additional exception information: The upgrade command is invalid or a failure has been encountered. Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products because the upgrade type is not supported or was not specified. Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException: Exception of type ‘Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException’ was thrown.    at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.UpgradeTask.PrivateValidate(Int32 nextExecutionOrder)    at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.UpgradeTask.Validate(Int32 nextExecutionOrder)    at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.TasksQueue.Validate(Boolean useDefaultExecutionOrder)

After doing a search or two on the error I came across this post:

http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/16104/sharepoint-server-2010-sp1-psconfig-issue/21031#21031

As it turns out, the client had UAC turned off and when he run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard from the start menu it didn’t prompt him to run as administrator.  After having him right click the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard shortcut and selecting Run As Administrator everything worked as expected and without error.
